Organizacion Nacional Indigena de Colombia (ONIC) is the national indigenous peoples’ organization in Colombia. The organization was founded in 1982. ONIC is an umbrella organization representing 44 indigenous organizations, about 800,000 people, from various indigenous people all over the country. Approximately half of the members are women. As of 2012, 2 women are represented in the National Board of 10 members. ONIC’s work includes strengthening its member organizations, political training, political mobilization, and influencing legislation and the political agenda. The organization has a particular focus on indigenous peoples’ rights, access to cultivable land, land rights and natural resource management.
