Guinea Bissau has been plagued by conflict since independence from Portugal. Both the liberation struggle and the civil war which followed displaced a large number of people and left the country affected by mines and ERW.
The National Mine Action Coordination Centre (CAAMI) and UNDP asked NPA to assist in order to help Guinea-Bissau comply with its MBT Article 5 obligations before its deadline. On 1 February 2012, NPA declared that all known anti-personnel mines had been cleared.
At the beginning of 2012, Guinea-Bissau declared it had completed its MBT Article 5 clearance obligations.
