The war between Russia and Georgia in 2008 left many items of UXO in Georgia. During the conflict, both sides also used cluster munitions. The cluster munition remnants problem in Georgia was mainly limited to the conflict area, especially in the region Karteli, north of Gori. NPA began its battle area clearance programme in Georgia in September 2008. Within three months, the clearance team managed to clear the village of Ruisi, resulting in more than 1.1km2 of land being cleared and returned to the population for safe use. It was then decided that the programme would continue its operations with locally employed and trained staff. During 2009, NPA cleared an additional 4.2km2 and released another 657,000m2 (122 football fields) of land through NTS.
