Mines in Congo DRC
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has a problem with landmines, but the problem with different types of remnants from war and abandoned ammunition is believed to be even larger. According to the government there is a nationwide problem with mines, ERW and abandoned ammunition, but the findings have mostly been in the east and north.
A nationwide survey was initiated in May 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011.
Cluster munitions have been used during the conflicts in Congo DRC, but there is no overview of the scope of the problem.
Norwegian People's Aid has been requested by the United Nations Mine Action Coordination Centre (UMACC) in Congo DRC to assist with non-technical and technical surveying and clearing operations to help Congo DRC to meet its obligation under Article 5 of the Mine Ban Treaty to clear all areas covered with mines. Norwegian People's Aid will begin surveying and clearing operations in Bas Congo province on the border with Angola in autumn 2011.
