Our work in Iraq
Norwegian People’s Aid is working for an Iraq free of oppression, that respects the rights of its various groups, and where people can participate in developing the country's resources together. Norwegian People’s Aid established its programme in the Kurdistan region in Iraq in 1995 at a time when the Kurds were threatened with gross oppression from the regime in Bagdad. Norwegian People’s Aid is no longer principally focused on the Kurdish autonomous region but is currently working on development programmes and mine clearing in various parts of Iraq.
Since 1995, Norwegian People’s Aid has operated a programme to clear landmines and undetonated ordnance in the Kurdistan region. This programme was phased out in 2009. As of 2010, Norwegian People’s Aid has been performing mine clearing in the Basra area in southern Iraq.
Norwegian People’s Aid’s development programme in Iraq supports local organizations for social and political change. Strengthening and supporting the local organizations and activists generate social and political participation, gain key rights and put critical social tasks on the ruling power’s agenda. Strengthening women’s rights, social participation and protection against violence are important components in this.
