Development cooperation in Palestina
Norwegian People’s Aid is active in occupied Palestine (Gaza Strip and West Bank, including East Jerusalem) where it is working to strengthen Palestinian society and its ability to resist the occupation policy imposed on it. Norwegian People’s Aid supports Palestinians’ legitimate right to independence and freedom from oppression, occupation and forced exile. In that effort, it is primarily the Palestinians themselves and their ability to secure a daily life and a better future that is our point of departure. Additionally, Norwegian People’s Aid intends to contribute to exercise international pressure to have the occupation lifted.
Norwegian People’s Aid has been active in aid work in Palestine since 1987 and has offices in Gaza City. The long-term goal is to contribute to generating positive political, social and economic development for oppressed groups. Norwegian People’s Aid is working for this by strengthening local organizations and by promoting democratic processes at the grass-roots level and to support local organizations' effort in the local community.
A central focus for our local partners is the right of various groups in society to participate and be heard socially and politically, such as young people, women and refugees. The right to land and resources is another focus area—especially as it relates to preventing that land and resources continue to be appropriated from the Palestinian population. Palestinian women’s rights and protection against violence are prioritized areas.
Palestinian society is under heavy pressure after several years of acts of war and destruction under the occupation. Norwegian People’s Aid is also supporting aid projects within farming/fishing and training, attempting to enable, as much as possible, the Palestinians to ensure their own welfare under these difficult conditions. Financial support and social measures contribute to young people and children being able to continue their education. Local partners’ projects contribute to the ability to continue farming of land and that the fishermen in Gaza can maintain their activities.
