Moving borders through music at first World Music Festival in Serbia

The first ever World Music Festival in Serbia was organized in Takovo outside Gornji Milanovac in the period 29-31 May 2009 bringing a rich and varied musical programme to the visitors with bands and folklore performances from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Norway, Turkey, Serbia and Slovenia.

On the 12th of May 2009, key football stakeholders and CSO activists gathered in Sarajevo at the workshop “Education through Sports” to discuss how to combat racism and discrimination on the sport fields in the Balkans. A shared belief was proven that racism and discrimination on the sport fields are only a reflection of society in general.

“In general, this is one of our most useful meetings”- this is how Mr. Haris Halilhodzic, from the NGO Youth Club “Under the Same Sun”, Jablanica, Bosnia and Herzegovina described the regional meeting of seven NPA youth partner organizations from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia that took place in Skopje, on April 24-26, 2009.

“If you are half as loud in your school as you were last night at the party after the opening of this conference, your voice will be heard and your rights considerably improved” said Ljubica Grozdanovska, a facilitator of the student conference “High School Democracy in Macedonia”. The conference was organized by NPA’s youth partner Inter-Ethnic Project Kumanovo in the framework of the project “Human Rights Campaign: Listen to the Students’ Voice in Your School”. In the period 10-12 April 2009, ten teachers and 20 students from Kumanovo, Skopje, Gostivar, Kavadarci and Tetovo gathered in Ohrid, Macedonia in order to learn about high-school democracy in various parts of Macedonia and discuss the ways of making school campaigns and improving student cooperation across the ethnic lines.

POZEGA, April 04-05 –Photographs of world famous people with Roma ancestry: actors Charlie Chaplin, Yul Brynner, sir Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins and actresses Natalie Wood and Rita Hayworth; footballers Eric Cantona, Ricardo Quaresma, Andrea Pirlo, Milan Baros; Adrian Nastase, Romanian former Prime minister (2000-2004) and Juscelino Kubitschek De Oliveira, the former president of Brasil; artists Pablo Picasso, Osman Nedjo and La Chunga – the famous flamenco dancer; musicians: Adam the Ant, David Essex, Ronnie Wood, Lajko Felix, ”Gipsy Kings”, Esma Redzepova, Boban Markovic, Saban Bajramovic, Diango Reinhart and the “Kal” band were part of the two-day exhibition “They are Roma, too” that was organised by NPA’s partner the Centre of Young Roma from Pozega, CEMROP.

Belgrade Centre for Human Rights hosted an experts’ dialogue meeting on preventing and remedying human rights breaches in Belgrade, from 26-27 March 2009. The meeting gathered more than twenty human rights practitioners – mainly judges of supreme and constitutional courts from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and Norway.

(Belgrade, 10. March 2009) Ten years after the NATO bombing of Serbia, unexploded cluster munitions still represent a deadly threat to tens of thousands of people living in 16 municipalities in Serbia. A survey implemented by Norwegian People’s Aid for the first time details the scope of the impact of cluster bombs in the country. The results of the survey were presented at a press conference in Belgrade today.

The 3rd Unite Against Racism Conference was organized by UEFA and the Polish Football Association in Warsaw, Poland 3-4 March, 2009. More than 200 delegates from football associations (FA), leagues, clubs, NGOs and media gathered to find a way to raise awareness about the problems of racism and discrimination, and to put forward positive and practical solutions for addressing racism in football.

In the period 1-4 March 2009, more than 120 representatives of students’ organizations from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia as well as representatives of NGOs and institutions that work with students’ organizations gathered in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia, in order to exchange information and experience and explore possibilities for co-operation across the region.

Lack of proper meeting places is a general challenge for youth around Serbia. However, young people can themselves through positive action solve this challenge in many places. This is just what a group of high school students did in the small town of Boljevac in eastern Serbia through initiating a campaign for the renovation of the local sports hall.
