NPA in Tanzania
|
NPA’s earlier involvement in Tanzania goes back to 1988 and includes involvement in coordinating Norwegian assistance to the ANC exiles and the exile-settlements in cooperation with both African National Congress (ANC) and Pan African Congress (PAC). The exiles were repatriated in 1994 and the settlements handed over to the Tanzanian Government. |

After 1994 NPA’ involvement in Tanzania has been in three sectors:
First NPA has assistance to strengthening civil society through support to the NGO sector. This is within the Framework Agreement with Norad. This support is mainly directed geographically to Rukwa Region through our partner organisation Rukwa Association of Nongovernmental Organisations (RANGO). The other part of this support is general and has been directed towards institutional building and organisational development of a diversity of organisations without a geographical priority.
Second NPA has the refugee assistance in partnership with the Government and UNHCR. NPA has since 1994 worked in Ngara, Kagera Region supporting refugees from Rwanda and Burundi. Our areas of involvement in the refugee work have been the sectors of health, education, community services. This programme has also targeted the refugee-affected areas in the Kagera Region. The project was finished in late 2008.

Thirdly, we have a food security program focusing on the semi arid areas of the Dodoma Region. This programme was started in 1997 following the El Nino rains as a food relief programme. It has since then developed to become a food security programme mainly focusing a multiplication of cassava production. |
