Ongoing Operations

During the year 2008, NPA Mine Action is conducting operations in the three states of Central Equatoria, Western Equatoria and Jonglei. Survey and Clearance operations are being conducted in Central and Western Equatoria; Emergency Survey and EOD are being conducted in Jonglei. Further information is provided at the links provided.

Central Equatoria

Operatons in Central Equatoria are the core activity for the programme because the programme is established in Yei County. This decision has been vindicated because the highest number of Dangerous Areas (DAs) have been recorded in Central Equatoria (660 according to IMSMA data of December 2007).

Previous and ongoing tasks have been centred on the Yei-Juba road - for example the Line of Disengagement (LOD) at Kulipapa in Ganji Payam, Juba County and also the Yei-Kaya road. The scale of some of these tasks demand integrated Manual and Mechanical deployments.

Survey teams are kept busy with the recording and updating of Dangerous Areas. In addition they are regularly called upon to make new assessments of locations that have been identified for construction of eg. schooling for UNICEF or the survey of locations that have been identified for the construction of hydro-power stations on the Nile River (such a task has been requested by the Government of South Sudan). The EOD teams are often deployed in support of the Survey Teams.

The impact of the work is assessed according to the NPA Task Impact Assessment (TIA) methodology – please see section at ‘Toolbox’.

Battle Clearance Tasks have been focused on cluster-strike locations eg Limbe Payam in Lanya County.

Western Equatoria

In the year 2008 operations in Western Equatoria are focused on General Survey, EOD and BAC. During the first quarter of 2008, NPA Mine Action Sudan teams have recorded new DAs in the counties of Mundri East and Mundri West. The Battle Area Clearance (BAC) team will continue work on cluster-strike tasks in Mundri.

  Jonglei

During the dry months of 2008 (January to May) NPA Mine Action Sudan is conducting Emergency operations in Jonglei state. Survey teams have deployed in support of the WFP-GTZ route construction project between Mabior and Doleib Hill/Malakal. This is a high priority task because it is the final link in the establishment of the national road network.

Survey and EOD capacity has also been deployed to address the UXO problem. A number of spot tasks were conducted and an abandoned UXO store has been marked for subsequent tasking.

The region is considered to be a high priority because of the high number of returns that are coming via the Pagak, Akobo and Pochalla corridors. In general, the state of Jonglei and the Upper Nile region is a very demanding environment. There is a plan for disarmament within the Upper Nile region but this is proving to be a very difficult process.
