The Toolbox

The NPA Mine Action Sudan toolbox comprises a number of capacities. In summary there are:

  • Survey – 5 x General Survey teams. Also trained in NPA Task Impact Assessment.
  • Manual – 4 x teams each comprising two sections of 8 deminers
  • Mechanical – 1 x MineWolf flail/tiller system, 1 x Bagger armoured excavator, 4 x Casspir Mine Protected Vehicles (MPVs)
  • Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) – 2 x teams
  • Battle Area Clearance (BAC) – 1 x team comprising two sections of 8 operators

Task Impact Assessment (TIA) / Survey:

NPA Task Impact Assessment is a methodology which has been established across existing NPA Mine Action programmes. Household and community-level interviews are conducted in order to establish Pre-Clearance Impact (Phase 1). This will assist the programme management in identifying priorities for clearance (Local and National government directives may often supersede this process). Thereafter, TIA teams will make a brief impact assessment during clearance (Phase 2) – at this stage development activities which are due to follow can be confirmed or indeed actioned. After clearance, typically after a 6 month period, an assessment will be conducted to confirm impact.

Manual Demining

Since the start of operations in September 2004, the Manual Teams have cleared 210,508m2 (as at 31 December 2008). The 4 manual teams each comprise two sections of 8 deminers. Team 2 is an all-female team.

Mechanical Demining

A MineWolf flail/tiller system has been on the programme since October 2005. Currently there are 6 trained operators. As at 31 December 2007, the MineWolf has processed 1,960,874 m2 of suspected ground. The productivity of this machine has increased exponentially – in 2007, 1,379,434 m2 of ground was processed. It is a vital asset in the NPA Mine Action Sudan toolbox.
