NPA in Nicaragua
The development objective of the Country Programme aims to contribute to an integrated democratization of Nicaraguan society while endeavouring to improve living conditions through strengthening organizations and the participation of marginalized social groups.
There are three main priorities in the NPA programme:
- local development;
- organizational strengthening and exercise of influence
- promotion and defense of human rights.
The gender approach is understood as part of the priority for promotion and defense of human rights and as well, it is an issue that crosscuts the whole programme. Development of this focus has started in 1998 (see project 148609, Competence Building).
The target groups prioritized in the NPA Nicaragua programme are:
- Small-scale industrialists
- Campesinos
- Artisanal fishermen
- Poor urban and rural residents
- The indigenous population
- Demobilized soldiers
Within all groups, special attention is given to women.

Human Rights under pressure
The Nicaraguan Centre for Human Rights (CENIDH) was established in 1990 to defend and promote human rights. The main motivation was to defend the achievements of the Sandinista Popular Revolution in the early eighties.
