Cause and scope of the landmine problem
As a result of the spill-over from the Mozambique internal conflict, there was suspicion of mines and ERW contamination at
crossing points on the 1000 kilometer border between Mozambique and Malawi and routes as well as around refugee camps. There
was also suspicion that 33 former Malawi Young Pioneers training bases were affected by Unexploded Ordnance (UXO). In addition,
the Government of Malawi was concerned about the effects of flooding on the border, which could have caused migration of mines
into Malawi.
The Malawian authorities plan to solve the mine/uxo problem in Malawi in cooperation with NPA in 2008.
