Sudan – a year with the peace agreement

The first anniversary of the peace agreement in Sudan coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the country gaining its independence from Great Britain. Twenty-two of these years have borne the stamp of Africa’s longest armed conflict. The fragile peace must be guarded.

Vice-president Garang dies in tragic accident

It was with grief NPA received the message of John Garangs tragic death after a helicopter crash saturday. NPA has worked closeley with SPLM/A since 1986 and has met Dr. Garang on numerous occasions both in Sudan, in Kenya and in Norway.

Urges the government of Sudan to include the Civil Society

More than 70 representatives from about 50 local and international NGOs met last week in Oslo to discuss the role of the civil society in reconstructing the war torn Sudan following the peace agreement that was signed i january. The meeting resulted in a statement from the Sudan Civil Society Forum to the government of Sudan. The statement urges the government to follow and ratify International conventions particularly Convention for Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women and the Convention Against Torture.
