Accident injures two NPA staff
Two NPA staff injured during clearance of unexploded cluster munitions in South Lebanon
On 15 January 2014, an accident occurred during clearance of a cluster munition field at CBU-849 in Ter Harfa in South Lebanon. Anwar Fayyad and the site supervisor Yousef Shweikh of the NPA Team 2 were injured, but the injuries are not life-threatening. Shweikh suffered minor injuries from fragments to his leg, hand and eye, while Fayyad suffered injuries from fragments to his eyes.
In accordance with Lebanon National Mine Action Standards, the accident investigation board has been established and led by Lebanon Mine Action Centre to investigate the cause of the accident with full cooperation of the NPA MAP Lebanon team as required.
South Lebanon is contaminated with unexploded cluster munitions from the summer of 2006 attacks, where it is estimated by the United Nations that more than 4 million cluster submunitions were dropped by Israel. NPA has been clearing unexploded cluster munitions in South Lebanon since 2007 and is currently operating in the country with seven clearance teams.
