Development Cooperation in Mozambique

The exploitation of natural resources and economic growth in Mozambique has not so far led to reductions in poverty.

It has led to a concentration of economic and political power and restrictions in basic freedoms. Norwegian People’s Aid partners in the country are civil society organisations actively engaged in defending fair management and allocation of natural resources. Our most important partners are membership organisations that are strongly rooted in communities of small farmers.

Norwegian People’s Aid began its programme in Mozambique in 1984 in the shape of humanitarian support to Mozambican refugees in Zimbabwe and the population of the drought-affected areas of Tete province. Our operations today are organised and led from the office in Maputo. We also have a local office in Tete. The country office reports to the Norwegian People’s Aid regional office for southern Africa in Johannesburg.

Support to civil society

Civil society in Mozambique plays a critical role in the Mozambican state’s governance structure and practice. Norwegian People’s Aid supports 14 partner organisations, contributing to increased institutional capacity to defend small farmers’ rights to land and resources and to protect their livelihoods against agribusiness and the mining industry. Norwegian People’s Aid supports farmers who organise themselves to defend their interests and demand access to land and resources. One of our partner organisations is UNAC, one of the largest membership organisations in Africa.

Norwegian People’s Aid has also undertaken mine clearance in Mozambique from 1993 to 2006 and from 2012 to 2017.
