Galkayo Educational Centre for Peace and Development (GECPD) is a women’s non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 1999. It begun as an initiative by a group of women educators and professionals who mobilized community and international resources to rehabilitate an Adult Education Center destroyed and looted during the civil war in Somalia. The idea was to provide basic education for girls and functional literacy skills for women.
The objective of the organization is to: promote education for girls, women, youth and community for social reconstruction of Somalia, to strengthen girls’ and women’s abilities to gain access to greater economic resources, basic education and primary health care and to encourage and protect the physical, psychological and social well-being of the girls and women in general. Using a gender and rights based integration approach the organization seeks to achieve its objectives through formal and non-formal education, skills enhancement and peace building.
Through this approach, official curriculum for both formal and non-formal education is complimented with awareness training programs in Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Violence Against Women (VAW), including sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV), political and community participation, HIV/AIDS, peace and reconciliation, women and girl child rights, environmental education and conservation, reproductive health for women, primary and community health care.
