Development cooperation in Myanmar
Norwegian People's Aid works to strengthen civil society by promoting the development of local organizations and to support their efforts to improve living conditions in the communities where they are active.
We support various local organizations working in both districts and urban areas. In addition to being involved in issues related to livelihoods in these communities, our partner organizations focus on promoting equality and participation in decision making, as well as issues of a technical nature, such as information on better farming methods.
When cyclone Nargis devastated parts of southern Myanmar in early May 2008, Norwegian People's Aid immediately started supporting local organizations that participated in relief work. This assistance has continued in the reconstruction and rehabilitation phase. Norwegian People's Aid's partner organizations in areas affected by the cyclone have built schools and reading sheds, distributed fishing nets, boats and goods for farming. They have given communities means and tools to start rebuilding lives and communities after the natural disaster.
Many of Norwegian People's Aid's partners are constructively engaged in the process of political transformation and reconciliation taking place in Myanmar. Through cooperation with local partners Norwegian People's Aid will continue its presence in Myanmar and provide support to civil society. It is also our ambition to be a channel for communication and information related to social challenges and development in the country.
