APDH (Permanent Assembly for Human Rights) was established in 1984. The organization is among the most active defenders of human rights. They are particularly active along the border with Colombia to the north, in the provinces of Sucumbíos, Carchi, Esmeraldas and Imbabura. This border program has received support from Norwegian People's Aid since 1999. The program covers the northern part of Ecuador bordering Colombia. APDH demand rights for the population along the border and monitors military, social, environmental and human aspects. They also help with support and organizational strengthening of the Border Network for peace in the three provinces. The Border Network for Peace consists of parish councils, public assemblies, community organizations, women's and youth groups, organizations of settlers and Colombian refugees.
