CONAIE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador) is the main organizational structure of the indigenous movement and the largest social organization in Ecuador. It was founded in 1986 and represents the 14 indigenous nationalities and 28 peoples in the country. It comprises 3 regional organizations: in the Highlands, ECUARUNARI (Confederation of the Kichwa Nationality of Ecuador); on the Coast, CONAICE (Council of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Coast); and in the Amazonia, CONFENIAE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazonia). Its political project is the construction of an inclusive Plurinational State and the consolidation of the indigenous peoples and nationalities and their territories. CONAIE struggles against discrimination and to guarantee unity in diversity, social equality, and equity.
