During the entire period as an independent state, Syria has been a dictatorship. Groups that have not been loyal to the regime, such as the Kurds, have been subjected to abuse, deprived of their citizenship and have had to give large areas of land to Arab settlers. The Muslim Brotherhood and other political opposition has also been brutally suppressed.
