As a result of the civil war in Mozambique, it was suspected that mines and cluster munition remnants were contaminating the 1,000km-long border between Mozambique and Malawi, and around refugee camps in the area.

NPA operated in Malawi in 2006 and 2007, bringing demining resources to Malawi that were formerly deployed in its programme in Mozambique in order to initiate a national survey of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW). From May to October 2007, NPA’s survey identified six potentially hazardous areas.

On the basis of this survey, the areas suspected to be contaminated were cleared or otherwise released by survey, and Malawi declared itself in compliance with its Article 5 obligations.
