Climate change and environmental degradation are increasingly affecting the implementation of the Convention on Cluster Munitions — from contamination patterns and clearance operations to the safety of affected communities and the sustainable use of released land.
The Vientiane Capital Action Plan provides an important opportunity to strengthen how climate and environmental considerations are integrated into implementation of the Convention on Cluster Munitions.
The discussion will focus on
- How climate change and environmental degradation affect cluster munition remnant contamination, survey, clearance and land release.
- Operational experience from affected States Parties and implementing organisations.
- Practical approaches to integrating climate and environmental considerations into Convention implementation.
- The importance of reflecting climate and environmental considerations in the political declaration and in the actions and indicators of the Vientiane Capital Action Plan.
