Norwegian embassy visits NPA demining task in Mozambique

Clarisse Barbosa Fernandes from Norwegian Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique visited, on September 5, the NPA demining task in Maroeira community situated in Songo, Cahora Bassa district.

The aim of the visit was primarily to monitor projects funded by the Norwegian Embassy. Ms. Fernandes visited NPA where she was given a briefing about NPA’s operations.  The visit was positively perceived and admired for having female deminers conducting mine clearance in Maroeira.

“It was very interesting to go and visit the sight and be introduced to all 9 women deminers, ranging from 21–28 years old, all from the province of Tete,” says Ms. Fernandes.

The Maroeira demining task started last year with intention to clear mines within the Carionga village where the local population faces the mine threat on a daily basis as mines are located close to their homes. The task was initiated on 4th December, 2012 and so far 12,672 m² and 44 Anti-Personnel Mines have been cleared from the village.
