NPA defines over one million square meters of confirmed hazardous area (CHA) following technical survey in Phong Thai ward, Hue city
From 2 June to 29 July 2025, the NPA Hue multi-task team conducted the technical survey (TS-411-0066) in the residential areas of Phuong Hop and Dong Lam, located in Phong Thai ward, Hue city.
Over the course of nearly two months, the team surveyed 540,000m² of land, safely detected and removed 49 cluster munitions and 18 other explosive ordnance. As a result, a confirmed hazardous area (CHA) designated CHA-411-100 has been defined, covering over one million square meters.
According to local observations, most of the land within this hazardous area is currently used for forestry (acacia plantations), agriculture (vegetables, rice, artichokes, cassava), livestock farming, aquaculture, and community roads. However, about 15% of the land remains abandoned due to fears of potential unexploded ordnance beneath the surface.
Beginning 1 August 2025, the multi-task team will shift from technical survey to clearance operations within this newly confirmed hazardous area. This transition marks a critical step in eliminating remaining explosive threats and ensuring the safety of local residents.
This upcoming clearance work will bring direct benefits to 1,119 local residents - including 377 women and 382 children - and indirect benefits to another 1,386 people in the area.
NPA Vietnam sincerely thanks the governments of the United States, Norway, and the Federal Republic of Germany for funding our humanitarian mine action work in Vietnam.
